{"id":5551,"date":"2021-06-22T17:28:53","date_gmt":"2021-06-22T17:28:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prichard-backup.com\/July\/2021\/06\/22\/media-statement-on-discussing-race-sex-gender-and-religious-issues-in-the-classroom\/"},"modified":"2022-09-27T19:50:03","modified_gmt":"2022-09-27T19:50:03","slug":"media-statement-on-discussing-race-sex-gender-and-religious-issues-in-the-classroom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prichard-backup.com\/July\/media-statement-on-discussing-race-sex-gender-and-religious-issues-in-the-classroom\/","title":{"rendered":"Media statement on discussing race, sex, gender and religious issues in the classroom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]June 18, 2021<\/p>\n<p>Following the recent prefiling of bills related to the discussion of race, gender, and religion in classrooms and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ket.org\/program\/kentucky-tonight\/debating-critical-race-theory\/\">discussion of Critical Race Theory on Kentucky Tonight,<\/a>\u00a0we have issued the following statement:<\/p>\n<p>The Prichard Committee is deeply committed to ensuring equity in Kentucky schools and that our students enjoy an inclusive, respectful experience that ensures their success.\u00a0Continuing to improve our instructional environment so that it reflects the complexities of current events and their historical context is critical and should include discussions of race and racial justice.<\/p>\n<p>The Committee opposes outright limits on discussions regarding race, sex, gender, or religion in public school and\/or university curricula.\u00a0 Such limitations may in fact reduce the quality of education provided by our educational institutions and received by our students.\u00a0Moreover, they send the wrong message about Kentucky\u2019s progress in advancing racial equity and attracting and retaining a diverse workforce.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Kentucky should engage in a solutions-focused process and discussion to improve culturally relevant and inclusive education practices. Such a process is a systemic way to inform the development and revisions of our state standards and model curriculum framework which empowers students with the abilities and capacities in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.legislature.ky.gov\/law\/statutes\/statute.aspx?id=3551\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/apps.legislature.ky.gov\/law\/statutes\/statute.aspx?id=3551\">KRS 158.645<\/a>\u00a0and KRS\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/apps.legislature.ky.gov\/law\/statutes\/statute.aspx?id=3552\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.legislature.ky.gov\/law\/statutes\/statute.aspx?id=3552\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/apps.legislature.ky.gov\/law\/statutes\/statute.aspx?id=3552\">158.6451<\/a>\u00a0needed to become informed citizens.<\/p>\n<p>As our country celebrates freedom from slavery this weekend on Juneteenth National Independence Day, we must recognize that ignoring our painful past will certainly ensure that we repeat it somehow.
