Lexington, KY – The Kentucky Collaborative for Families and Schools and numerous other state and local organizations will celebrate Family Engagement in Education Week Nov. 15-19 with activities planned to encourage a renewed effort in school and family partnerships. The week will kick off with an official proclamation signing by Gov. Andy Beshear who will designate it as a statewide celebration of families and schools.

Following the proclamation signing on Nov. 15, Family Engagement Week in Education will include Zoom events such as a family story exchange, discussions on parent leadership in schools, podcasts, and a family game night. The week will also include social media challenges tied to daily themes. A full schedule of events can be found at prichardcommittee.org/week-at-a-glance.

The Community Action Council of Kentucky worked closely with the Kentucky Collaborative to coordinate the week’s events.

“To have an instrumental role in the statewide Family Engagement Week initiative has been an amazing experience,” said Kesha Richardson, ERSEA Director for the Community Action Council. “This work has allowed me to branch out across the state and meet others that are as passionate about family engagement as I am.”

Family Engagement Week was launched by Berea Partners for Education in 2017 to celebrate and deepen the conversation about family engagement with the Appalachian region schools it serves.

“We are excited to see Family Engagement Week recognition expand statewide through the work of the Kentucky Collaborative for Families and Schools,” said Grace McKenzie, Associate Director of Family Partnership for Partners for Education at Berea College.

The week will also include the release of resources to help schools and families enhance their relationships and build strong networks that lead to improved student outcomes, including a School Self-Assessment, Family Engagement Guide, Digital Playbook, and the Family Friendly School Certificate option.

“We are excited to finally get these resources in the hands of all Kentucky schools leaders. Our hope is that these resources support schools and families in building more authentic and trusting relationships,” said Brooke Gill, Director of Family Engagement for the Prichard Committee. “When true partnerships are happening in our schools, students and families experience a more equitable, and nurturing school experience. We also know teachers enjoy their jobs more when they feel a sense of belonging in their school community.”

The Kentucky Collaborative for Families and Schools is an initiative by the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence. It is a network of families, schools, districts, and community partners focused on increasing open communication, learning opportunities, and shared decision-making power across the Kentucky education system.
