Forty Kentucky parents from 14 counties across the state recently completed the Prichard Committee’s Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership (CIPL) fellowship program. The CIPL Fellowship is designed to offer participants a history of Kentucky’s education system and information on key topics relevant to help increase success for all students.

“Together, we are building a groundswell of active champions who believe excellence, equity, innovation and engagement are critical for realizing a world-class public education for every Kentuckian,” said Prichard Committee President & CEO Brigitte Blom Ramsey. “These 40 parents have taken a tremendous step in not only improving the education of their children, but also of other students in their communities.”

More than 2,500 parents have completed the program since it began over 20 years ago. Those parents have gone on to serve on local school-based decision-making councils (SBDMs) and school boards at the local and state level.

During their year-long candidacy to become fellows, participants complete webinars, participate in networking opportunities and complete a project in their local district. Projects must meet one of the following:

  • Increasing student literacy development/academic achievement
  • Addressing local and/or state policies that create barriers to family engagement and leadership
  • Creating opportunities for family engagement or family leadership and decision making

This CIPL Class had to overcome unforeseen circumstances with the Covid-19 Pandemic however, they rose the occasion and served 715 parents, 22 school staff, and 16 community-based organization staff through 2019-2020 CIPL Projects.
